What is a Big Idea? And how are they helpful in RE?

A Big Idea in Crossways is a significant concept, essential question or provocation that can be a foundational element for a sequence of learning.

A Big Idea:

• Promotes curiosity and imagination

• Fosters deep thinking

• Enables students to move from surface to deep to transfer learning

• Encourages students to make connections between the Crossways content and their lives

• Connects knowledge with skills and dispositions

• Invites dialogue and interpretation

The following commentary helps to support emerging and experienced teachers of Religious Education to understand how Big Ideas can be used in the learning design and the delivery of the Crossways Curriculum for RE.
