This section explores the Catholic school as part of the evangelising mission of the Church and names how the Religious Education learning area is integral to this. It explains how Religious education is in partnership with faith formation and how they are distinct and complementary.
It examines the cultural contexts in which Religious Education and faith formation are carried out. It enables teachers to understand the relationship between the school’s Catholic identity and the total curriculum of the school as they are called to proclaim and live the Reign of God.
The Foundation Document is the basis for the Crossways Purpose Statement for Religious Education.
The 2009 Foundation Document is under review. In the meantime, much of it remains current for the new Crossways.
The NCEC Framing Paper: Religious Education in Australian Catholic Schools (2018) provides an excellent national statement of these key foundational aspects, and it is being utilised in the review of the Foundation Document. An editable version and related resources are available at this NCEC page.
